Self-employed health and safety advisor Adrian Holmes has been officially appointed Town Crier for Sandwell.
The 56-year-old father-of-two is now the “voice of Sandwell” after auditioning outside Sandwell Council House in Oldbury, on 23rd December.
Sandwell Council Leader Cllr Darren Cooper hit on the idea of having an official town crier earlier this year.
He said: “Some people may see this as some kind of joke, but I am serious. I want to promote the image and profile of Sandwell to the widest audience.
“Adrian was an excellent candidate and has a wide knowledge of the history of the borough.”
Adrian, who lives in Waddington Road, Great Barr, gave a cry that was clear, concise and above all – loud!
And he started off as all good town crier’s should do with:
“Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!
Good people come closer and let me tell,
of my borough in the Midlands by the name of Sandwell,
T’was formed in the year nineteen seventy four,
by the joining of two County Boroughs that are no more”
A delighted Adrian said: “I just felt that I wanted to help promote the borough where I have lived for the last 30 years.
“My family is a little surprised by my new role, but they are all proud of me.”
Adrian said because of the volume of the voice he needed for his new role he could not practice at home.
“To be fair I had to think about the neighbours so I would rehearse in the car as I was driving along.”
Adrian will start his new role in the New Year.
