Serving justice in Sandwell

Some of you may have heard about the closure of Sandwell Magistrates Court.

Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service has decided to close Sandwell’s only court in September and move all cases to Walsall.

This is not acceptable and I’m seeking meetings about this with the Secretary of State, Michael Gove, and Sandwell’s MPs.

Justice needs to be done in Sandwell – and this is not going to happen by moving cases to Walsall.

Victims of crime and witnesses who appear in court shouldn’t be made to travel any further than they have to to give evidence.

The objections the council, the police and domestic abuse partners made against the closure have been ignored.

This decision needs a re-think – the closure of the magistrates court would make us the only Black Country council without our own court.

I’ll be raising this and I’m asking for the closure of the court to be postponed until the Government has had  chance to look at this again.
